Your complete guide to getting around China - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around China

China's transport menu is stacked. High-speed rail is the national backbone, clean, punctual, and a fraction of domestic airfare. In cities, the metro is the everyday workhorse: cheap, fast, and English-friendly in the largest hubs. Buses fill every gap but can be slow; ride-hailing apps (DiDi, Meituan) are the middle ground, moderate cost, door-to-door, and you pay in-app. Taxis are a splurge. Insist on the meter and have your destination written in Chinese. For short hops, shared bikes cost next to nothing and are docked everywhere. First-timer tip: download DiDi and Alipay before you land. Both work with foreign cards and spare you the "no cash, no ride" headache. At the airport, skip the unofficial cab touts, head to the official taxi rank or the clearly marked airport-express rail counter. The express is usually the quickest and cheapest route to the city center. If you arrive after it stops, the metered taxi queue is the only honest fallback.
